Some people think mics are a bit boring… here at Vintage Drummer we say nonsense! Mics are an important element of capturing the fantastic tone of vintage drums. I’ve got the great, the good and the downright bizarre. I am “missing” some big-name classics; Coles and Beyerdynamic Ribbons but there are plenty of classics here too, the inimitable AKG D12 which is the bass drum mic. I've got a lot of mics, the great and the good! I have some classics which any studio would be proud to boast ...and I have some "dark horses" that some producers and enginners would shake their head and say "that ain't never gonna work". We're back to using our ears again! I recently set up two AGK C414's for a Glyn Johns setup. The cymbals sounded harsh, the drums thin and distant. I switched to a cheap 20 quid battery-operated stereo mic - sounded awesome. I have plenty of vintage dynamic, condender, ribbon and crystal mics and any one of these could make your final cut!
By using my services rather than hiring a drummer and a studio separately to record drums, you will benefit from my pre-existing knowledge about how my gear is compatible with eachother and how to achieve certain sounds almost instantly. I know some of my snare drums "dont speak" to some of my mics, while others seem to harmonise without much EQ and sound great from the starting point. We will discuss the production sound you are looking for and I will base my selection on emulating that sound while making sure the relationship between the mics and the drums is always working perfectly.
